Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar presented BMW car each to Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu, bronze medal winning wrestler Sakshi Malik, gymnast Dipa Karmakar and badminton coach Pullala Gopichand at the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad on Sunday.
PV Sindhu won the first ever badminton silver while Sakhi created history by becoming the first ever women wrestler to win a medal. Dika Karmakar also created history by qualifying for the gymnastics finals and finished fourth, losing a medal by a whisker. Hyderabad Badminton Association President V Chamundeshwarnath sponsored these cars. Speaking at the event, Sachin Tendulkar said that these athletes have sacrificed so many things in their lives to bring laurels to the country. “When I went to Rio, they were not accessible. Such was the focus. They have done the country proud. I hope they will do a notch better by winning gold at the next Olympics at Tokyo in 2020,” Tendulkar said.
Pullala Gopichand said that these girls saved country’s pride and name by winning medals at the Rio Games. “’Save the girl child’ was the norm. But ‘saved by the girl child’ was what I would like to say. I congratulate these three ladies and thank Tendukar and Chamundeshwarnath for their constant support and help. I also would like to thank my coaches, physio and support staff at the academy without whom this would not have been possible,” he said.
