India’s new badminton sensation PV Sindhu fought her heart out before going down to World No.1 Carolina Marin 21-19, 12-21,15-21 in title clash to settle for a silver here on Friday. The Indian thus pocketed silver to become the first Indian female athlete to achieve the silver in Olympics.
Sindhu, though struggled to pacer her game against much higher ranked player, she staged a stunning comeback in the first set to clinch the thriller. The second set turned out to be a lopsided one as the Spaniard clinched it with ease. The decider was a rollercoaster ride as Spaniard took lead but only to concede to Indian. In the end, it was Marin who held her nerves and finished the game 21-15 to fell on the court in tears.
Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara bagged the bronze medal after London Olympic champion Li Xuerui pulled out with a knee injury that she suffered during the semifinal match against Marin on Thursday.
