India’s lone gold medallist Abhinav Bindra ended his career with a disappointment as he missed the bronze by a whisker in the 10m air rifle bronze medal shoot off on Monday. He shot 163.8 points in the bronze-medal play-off to settle for a fourth place. This is his last tournament as he had earlier announced his retirement from international career with this Rio Games. Bindra is the India’s only gold medal winner in Olympics when he shot the yellow metal at 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Much was expected of him this time but it turned out to be a heart-break for him and also for the Indian fans. Earlier in the qualifiers, Bindra finished seventh to qualify for the 10m air rifle quarterfinals while Gagan Narang crashed out after finishing a lowly 23rd.
